A colony world of the Republic of Manhattan located in the Ettersberg-system, planet formerly was an Earth Federation colony that broke away during the Sol Gamma Wave in 2601. It later was conquered by the Republic during the Annexation of the Western Territories in 2743, the Republic's annexation of the 27 independent colony worlds that dominated the space to its galactic west.
The colony was founded by a Capecchi group of settlers, the Sanger.

The planet was not ironically named after the Buchenwald concentration camp, a German Nazi concentration camp established Weimar, Germany, in July 1937, one of the first and the largest of the concentration camps on German soil. It was in fact named for the Buchenwald Resistance , a resistance group of prisoners inside the concentration camp. It involved Communists, Social Democrats, and people affiliated with other political parties, unaffiliated people, and Christians. The captain of the colony ship EFS Princess Mafalda was a direct descendant of the Buchenwald survivor Gert Schramm .
